The red-brick, Neo-Gothic Speicherstadt or warehouse quarter along the Zoll Canal was built between 1885 and 1927 as a free trade zone. The world's largest warehouse complex, it still stores exotic merchandise like coffee, spices, tobacco and oriental rugs. The UNESCO World Heritage Site can be explored by foot, boat or hot-air balloon. Walking tours in English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch and Chinese can be arranged by the Speicherstadt Museum in Block L of the neighborhood.
