Though the original building was destroyed during the war, this important collection of modern art, begun by the ever-eccentric Ludwig I, is now housed in a post-modern concrete-and-glass building designed by the archtiect Alexander Freiherr von Branca. Though the king's tastes were mainly German Romanticism and painters from the Munich school, it now has healthy representation of impressionism and art nouveau.
