Founded in 1892 when a wealthy banker donated his collection of exotic animals, the Barcelona Zoo has had several iconic animals throughout its history including elephants and the only known albino gorilla who died in 2003. In the Parc de la Ciutadella, the 32-acre (13 hectares) zoo has over 400 species of animals and daily dolphin shows.
