Hugh Taylor Birch, a Chicago attorney who bought up much of early Fort Lauderdale beach, built an Art Deco/Mediterranean-style home called Terramar, which is now the Visitor Center of 180-acre (73 ha) Hugh Taylor Birch State Park. Between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, it has a variety of habitats including a maritime hammock and freshwater lagoon and offers canoe rentals, nature trails, swimming, fishing, birdwatching and wildlife viewing. A pedestrian tunnel under A1A links the park with the beach. It is only a short walk over the bridge from The Galleria, the upscale shopping mall built on land Birch once owned.
