Part of the national Blue Waves eco-beach coalition, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea has a family-friendly beach with a fishing pier. The neighboring restaurants, bars and shops add to the village vibe. Man-made and coral reefs make it the Beach Diving Capital of South Florida for scuba divers and snorkelers. The big attraction is the SS Copenhagen, a cargo steamer sunk in 1900, an underwater archaeological preserve in 25 feet (almost 8 m) of water. Best visited by dive boat, reefs are about 700 feet (about 200 m) offshore.
