Pier House, extending out over the water on wooden piles, hasn't been added to the National Register of Historic Places but should be. Here is where Key West became the international destination in the late 1960s after David Wolkowsky, a local boy made good, came back to built the city's first full-service resort. Jimmy Buffet and Bob Marley got their starts here. Truman Capote spent the winter there . Sunset at Pier House became an institution. But most importantly, Wolkowsky, whose father once owned a fine clothing store on Duval, pushed for historic preservation and rescued buildings himself. Pier House today, under new ownership, is a spa resort with rooms and suites having king or two queen four-poser beds.
