A former gypsum quarry, Parc des Buttes-Chaumont is one of the largest, wildest and most diverse parks in the city. Its 62 hilly acres (25 hectares) are an untamed mix of lakes, bridges, grottos, waterfalls, steep stone stairways and a belvedere, which is a miniature of a Roman temple in Trivoli, Italy. The park is good for strolling, jogging, tai chi and picnics and has a traditional marionette theater and other amusements for children. A popular LGBTQ destination, especially on Sunday afternoons, is Rosa Bonheur, a traditional Guinguette or restaurant/dance hall.
