Deerfield Beach, about 15 miles north of Fort Lauderdale, has a nice public beach with volleyball, sandcastle building and noshing at nearby open-air eateries. The big draw is the 975-foot (nearly 300 m) International Fishing Pier where you can rent a rod or just enjoy the view. It's open 6 am to midnight Monday through Thursday and around the clock over the weekend.
