The world's largest National Coming Out Day transforms about 10 square blocks of Philadelphia's Gayborhood (with a capital G) into a gigantic block party with drag shows, bar crawls, music, shopping, games and good times for over 40,000 participants. In 1990, Philadelphia became the first US city to host an annual National Coming Out Day event, which was renamed "Outfest" in 1994. The following year, "gayborhood" entered the language when an alternative weekly editor, who was gay, used it in a headline on a story about the celebration.
